Well I’ve finally spoken to a few agencies and they all are saying basically the same thing. There really is not much that they will be willing to do while I don’t live reasonably close. Of course this is easily solved by just moving into the area…but of course that is way easier said than done.
I’m aware that New York City isn’t the easiest place to get reasonable rates for a place to stay so I know that this will be a challenge. When I started my searches I knew that prices were going to be slightly inflated compared to my current area but damn. This is out of control. 1 bedrooms for $1600, studios for $1100, single rooms for $900. And the rooms are a fraction of the size you would get for that kind of money where I am currently staying.
So what now..I have a few dollars saved up, but it would only last me about 6 months. I do not want to lock myself into anything for a year because its too risky, but I do need to stay at least a few months to see if this is right for me. This only leaves one resolution, Craigslist. Oh Gawd. You can get a lot from Craigslist, and I mean a lot. I’m talking from TVs and DVDs, to even STDs haha. Its a place for everything, including places for rent. As I looked through the rooms for rent I realized that this will be more difficult than I thought. Plus everyone is looking for a female roommate (weird).
After a few days of searching I think I will try something. I’m going to put an add out looking to rent a room from someone for a few months. I’m thinking 3 months. This way I’m there long enough to get settled and find work as well as have an escape route back down south if things suck (which I hope they won’t). I figure you can’t go though life saying “I wish I would have..” and things like that so I’m going for it. This will be interesting.
